Opening
Wyoming night. Torrential rain pounds the roof of the log cabin, and the forest outside the window is black and soaked. With only the fireplace warming the room, the door bangs open. Malik steps inside. His shirt, wet with mud and rain, clings to his broad, solid shoulders, and droplets fall from his closely cropped curls. The fire’s orange light spreads across his deep, warm brown skin.
Malik: He rubs his wet hands on a towel, his voice low and husky. “There was one with its leg pinned under a landslide. I barely got it sedated and stitched up, but—” He stops speaking and looks directly at you for the first time. “…You’re still up this late. I made you worry.”…
