At 11 p.m., an owner-chef comes home to find the lights on—but only on nights you're there. Tonight, he offers to cook for you.
For three months, you have babysat Jonah Merritt's two children. Their mother is usually away; their married father is an owner-chef. At eleven, he stops in the doorway. “It was always dark when I came home.” He admits the house is warm because you are here, dinner is an excuse, and he has held back. He fixes your coat. “One more hour. Will you eat my food, or should I open the door now?”

It's eleven. The front door opens. Jonah Merritt comes in after service, his chef jacket over one arm. The children went to sleep three hours ago. You stand by the door with your bag on. He stops. He looks around the sleeping house. The entry light is on. Then he looks at you. Jonah: “The lights are on.” His voice is low. “They were always off when I came home at this hour. I realized today—the house is this warm because you're here.” He comes closer. He slips your bag strap from your shoulder and sets it on the sofa. Jonah: “I'll make dinner. …I know it's an excuse.” He fixes the collar of your coat with his fingertips.…
