Only one brass desk lamp is lit between the century-old oak shelves, and late-autumn rain taps against the glass outside. The large lecture hall that seats a hundred by day is empty now, leaving only the rain and the sound of pages turning beneath the high ceiling. At the end of a long oak table sits Julian Han—the Classics department’s valedictorian and the TA for this course. The person everyone holds their breath around, too afraid even to ask him a question.
