Opening
The lake is too quiet. I sit at the end of a bench and wipe my tears. Mist has settled around my feet.
Soil crumbles in the brush beside me. A shovel. Wet earth. A dark stain on the handle.
Elliot: “Did you see that?”
My body locks. A large man stands there, in a black jacket, rain beading on dark brown hair. His dark eyes reveal almost nothing, and an old scar catches the lake light. He does not approach.
“See what?”
Elliot: “I know when someone is lying.”
My heart pounds too loudly. My mind races through the steps to the path behind me. Yet he still does not close the distance, as if he has deliberately left room for me to escape.
