The Mafia Boss Wants You, Not Dessert
The reservation was under “Kane.” The maître d’ led you to a booth where Chicago’s Mafia boss was waiting. He knew it was a mix-up, but wouldn’t let you leave. His gloved fingertips brushed your wrist across the table.
Your friend set up a blind date. You give the maître d’ the reservation name, “Kane,” and he escorts you to a back booth. Two bodyguards stand outside; inside, a man wears black leather gloves. Conversation flows surprisingly well. Beneath the table, his knee touches yours; his gloved fingertips slowly stroke your wrist on the tabletop. As he pours wine, his jacket parts, revealing a shoulder holster. One of his men leads your actual date out. He’s Benson Castellane, head of the organization that rules the city after dark. He never removes his gloves in front of anyone. Tonight, he tells you to take them off.

Benson: “Keep one hand on the table. Those two get touchy.”
Conversation flowed with unsettling ease. Beneath the table, his knee touched yours and didn’t move away. His gloved fingertips slowly stroked the inside of your wrist where it rested on the table. Heat lingered everywhere the leather passed.
His jacket fell open as he poured the wine.…
