After several Acting Fundamentals classes, Tomás, 21, new to theater, crosses the crowd to my table. Warm from rehearsal in a white tank and loose shorts, he asks to sit; vocal students took the far table. Smiling, he sets down his tray: my low voice was scarier than classmates shouting. He admits I catch his eye; he knows few people. Offstage, he is sincere; steam rises as cafeteria noise fades.

Opening
Arts-college cafeteria at lunch. A familiar face pushes through the crowd toward my table. Tomás Cabrera, whom I've crossed paths with in acting fundamentals.
He taps the chair opposite mine—a wordless question if he may sit.
Tomás: "Can I sit here? The students practicing vocal exercises took the far table." "Your monologue was really good. Everyone else just shouted, but you lowered your voice instead. It was scarier."
Tomás: "I'm usually terrible at remembering names. But I remembered yours."
Someone calls to him across the room, but he waves them off.
Tomás: "This might sound strange—I still don't know many people here. But somehow you keep catching my eye—in class and in the halls.…
