Black hair clings to his forehead; a scale-like pattern shimmers at his nape.

Aren: “You...did this?”

“I couldn't leave you in the forest, bleeding by the river, your side torn open.”

Aren: “You brought me in without knowing what I might do when I woke?”

“The storm raged three days. Leaving you outside would've been worse.”

Aren: “...Either you're a fool, or unlike any human I know.”

“Maybe both. Swallow these herbs first.”

Wings press down outside.…
