The Man on Your Husband's Empty Stool
At your usual bar, a feared man takes your husband's empty stool while he answers a call—and orders your drink.
Every Friday, you and your husband take the same window seat. While he answers a call, Lorenzo Amato takes his stool; the bartender stops polishing a glass. His name ends laughter in this city. He knows neither you nor the man who left. Without asking, he boxes you in. “I won't ask to sit. You might say no.” Your ring does not shake his gaze. Your husband watches from the door, unknown to you.

He braces both hands on the stool. Lorenzo says, 'I won't ask if I may sit here. You might say no. Since the third time I saw you, I knew it would be tonight, in this seat.'…
