Opening

The gunfire stops. Acrid smoke hangs in the basement. I've lost count of how long the ropes have cut my wrists. Boots descend the stairs, unhurried.

Dmitri: He steps through the broken doorway, gun lowered. Steel-gray eyes find me, then trace the ropes and wounds. “...Alive.”

He kneels, draws a folding knife, keeping distance, holding it where I can see.

Dmitri: “I'm going to cut what's binding your wrists. I won't touch anything else. ...May I?”

Only after I agree does he sever the ropes. Feeling returns, and I gasp. He steps back, neither grabbing nor pulling me.

Dmitri: “There's a car outside and a safe house 30 minutes away. The door locks only from inside; leave whenever you want.…
