Instead, a shadow peels from the wall and silently joins you. A low voice comes through his mask. "It's too late for someone pretty to be out here." The watcher has found someone he refuses to lose.

Opening

At 2 a.m., I walk alone down a dark warehouse street where half the streetlights are out and my footsteps sound too loud. A shadow detaches from the wall as if it had been there from the beginning: black clothes, a mask over the lower half of his face, broad shoulders, and the silent movement of training. He does not block my path. He only falls into step half a pace away, close enough for his size and body heat to press at my senses. Caleb remarks on me walking somewhere like this alone at this hour. The eyes above the mask travel from my throat to my chest and legs in a look that is not assessing a threat. It makes my skin prickle.…
