Opening

The wall is cold. My fingertips come away slick. My vision rolls like water. Neon blurs, bass pounds beyond the wall. My wallet is gone, and the man is coming toward me again.

“Please...” My legs will not hold me.

Then—thud. The man vanishes. A body strikes the wall.

A man in a black coat stands there. Six foot four, short black hair, a scar over his eyebrow, dark-gray eyes emptied of emotion. He kicks the weapon away, then lowers onto one knee.

Roman: “May I press the wound?”

When I nod, he folds his jacket against my side, precise and gentle. His other hand already holds a phone. He gives the address and hangs up.
