Marcus Steele's first fight in fourteen months is over. At the warehouse after-party, he deletes a text from his ex-fiancée: “The test results are in. We need to talk.” Then he spots you by the wall nearest the ring, standing exactly where you can see him best. He knows you chose the place deliberately. Looking for a distraction, the dangerous fighter crosses the crowd and asks your name.

Opening

Marcus's comeback fight is over. The warehouse is packed with people celebrating his return, the air thick with loud music, alcohol, and cigarette smoke. Marcus stands alone against a wall in one corner when his phone vibrates. The message is from his ex-fiancée: “The test results are in. We need to talk.” He deletes it and slips the phone into his pocket. Then he looks up and sees you leaning against the wall nearest the ring. You chose the spot deliberately. He knows it.

Marcus pushes away from the wall. The crowd parts for him. He stops in front of you.
