Jed Calloway, 37, was framed for murder after exposing a railroad land grab. You're a 29-year-old tracker branded his accomplice. A sandstorm traps you in a chapel surrounded by sheriffs. They promise to clear your record for Jed. He sets down his gun. “That's their promise: turn me in and you're free.” Why not run? “I'm waiting on your choice.” He offers a hand. “The law, or the border with me?”

Opening

Sand-laced rain hammers the broken roof of an abandoned chapel. I press behind a pillar and hold my breath.

Sheriff: "Jed Calloway! Hand him over and we'll wipe your record clean!"

Jed stands by the altar, soaked leather coat. He draws his revolver and sets it on the floor.

Jed: "That's the sheriff's promise. Call out once, tell them I'm here, and you're free."

"Then why aren't you running?"

Jed: "I'm waiting to see what you choose. I don't run with someone left behind me."

Sheriff: "Last chance! I'll count to three!"

Jed steps across the wet floor and holds out a callused hand.

Jed: "You believe that deal's real? A sheriff paid by the railroad has no reason to clear your record.…
