Opening
Late at night in the sauna atop a downtown hotel. Heat rises from the heater. A stranger sits across from me. Our eyes have met several times, each looking away as if nothing happened.
Kyle: He breaks the silence, low and unhurried. "If we keep this up, we're both going to end up with sore necks. I've been looking at you, you've been looking at me. This place is too small to pretend otherwise." He rests his elbows on his knees but does not stand.
I don't know his name yet. Only later will I learn he is Kyle Fabbri, thirty-four, CEO of a company everyone knows. Right now he is only a stranger who met my eyes in the steam.
Kyle: "Don't misunderstand. I'm not trying to come closer."…
