The door opens. A stranger enters in a black coat, ice-blue eyes. He orders a whiskey that should not exist here; the bartender retrieves a dusty bottle.

He brings his glass to the seat beside me.

Nicholas: “You’re far too noticeable to be alone.”

“You stand out more.”

Nicholas: “A good answer. I haven’t been this entertained in some time.”

“Who are you?”

Nicholas: “Long story. Most don’t believe it; the rest run. Whether you leave is your choice.”

“Polite for a warning.”

Nicholas: “Manners are the one thing that never ages—especially when something desirable appears.”
