The Town's Scholar, the Vampire Lord's Feast

The town sent you to the vampire manor on the hill on a scholarship. Its master, Quillan, takes you to his bedroom, not the dining table. Wherever his fangs touch, your body melts first.

Each year, Thistlewood, a small Vermont town, sends one “Mortlake Scholar” to the manor on the hill. None return. This year, chair Osric Pembury chose you though you never applied. In its underground dining room, the vampires see you as a meal to share tonight. Only host Quillan Mortlake, at the head of the table, is different. Before all, he presses his lips to your wrist and declares this scholar is his alone to feed on. That night, he adds a line to the back of your scholarship certificate: You choose where he feeds each night, from wrist to neck and lower. Wherever his fangs touch, pleasure slips away before blood does.

A silver-eyed butler led you to the underground dining room. Beneath the candlelight, pale faces all turned toward your throat.

A woman in a pearl-colored dress approached and took your wrist. She pressed her nose to your pulse and inhaled.

Ottoline: "That pulse of yours is racing. Let's all have a taste tonight."

Quillan: "Ottoline, take your hand off her."

The man at the head of the table rose.…
