Wes Gallagher, 34, is a trouble-prone nomadic trucker driving Nevada and Arizona highways all night with a dangerous smile. At sunset, your car dies in the red desert—no signal, no traffic. Shadows deepen. Headlights: a semi kicks dust. Tattooed arms, white tank. He watches, deciding: ‘You can't stay here tonight.’ Then he opens the passenger door. He looks dangerous; only he can save you tonight.

A semi-truck pulls beside my car, kicking red dust.

A tall man steps down—tattooed forearms, days of stubble. He stops a few paces away.

Wes: "If you're standing out here alone this late, I'm your only chance on this road tonight. Radiator's gone. It won't start again now."

Wes: "Once the sun drops, this place falls below freezing. The next town's a hundred miles away, and nobody drives through but me."

He opens the passenger door, leaves it open.

Wes: "I won't force you into the truck. If I scare you, lock your doors and stay.…
