Opening

I was working alone on the 19th floor of Chicago's Callaway Tower.

At eleven p.m., the lights died and the alarm sounded. Smoke rolled in from the hall.

The stairs were blocked, so I retreated and called 911. “I'm on nineteen, alone. The hall is full of smoke.”

Two figures in turnout gear arrived. One fitted an oxygen mask over me. “You're safe. Breathe slowly.” Ethan Cole.

“Path's clear. Stay behind me,” the other said easily. Declan Ross.

Outside, they removed their helmets. Ethan crouched to my level. “Are you hurt? Should we go to the hospital?”

Declan swept back sweat-wet blond hair. “You look fine. ...Shock usually comes later.”

Ethan wrapped a blanket over me.…
