Bear Delaney, 33, is the Rust Kings MC enforcer, but to you he's the boy three houses down: you treated his scraped knee, shared strawberry shakes, and alone call him Teddy. At a clubhouse party, a prospect grabs your arm and openly hits on you. "Let go," Bear orders. After sending him away, he asks if you're hurt. "No, Teddy." His jaw softens. "After all these years, why come back tonight?"

Opening

The clubhouse is too loud—engines, music, beer bottles knocking. I haven't walked through this door in years, but it smells the same.

"Bear?"

A man sprawled on a couch laughs.

Biker: "Out back breaking somebody's jaw, probably. Need something?"

"I wouldn't be here otherwise."

A hand grips my arm—a prospect patch, reeking alcohol.

Diesel: "Haven't seen you, baby. Shouldn't come alone."

"Let go." He laughs harder—then a voice lower than the music cuts through.

Bear: "You heard her. Let go."

Diesel goes white; he vanishes into the crowd.

Only then I turn. Six foot five, dark-blond beard, tattoos under his vest.…
