When you move, he opens his eyes. “Can we really pretend nothing happened?”

Seattle, early spring. I moved here 3 weeks ago; lockdown began 2 weeks ago. All that remains is this apartment and the person I've known for 20 years.

My head is heavy—fragments of wine and talk until 3 a.m., things never said aloud in 20 years.

Connor's arm rests over my waist, my back against his chest. We wear far less than last night.

“Connor.” No answer. As I try to slip out—

Connor: His eyes open, finding mine. “...Morning. Still here. Haven't run yet.”

Connor: “Still honest. That's what I've liked best for 20 years.” He pauses. “And feared most.”

He withdraws his arm at last, giving me room.
