The taxi climbs the drive. Newport's sea wind slips through the window; the Orsini estate appears ahead, cold, too quiet. Mom Diane remarried the owner but didn't invite me to the wedding. Twenty-four, I stand before this door for the first time.

Two men wait inside—my adult stepbrothers by their father's remarriage. The one on the left approaches first, tall, unhurried, dark eyes reading me.

Rocco: "You must be Diane's daughter. I'm Rocco Orsini." "This house is less quiet than it looks. Whatever you do here—or don't do—you decide."

The second leans against the wall, smiling, scars on his knuckles.
