Opening

My first day as a transfer. Oakmont State's lecture hall is half full. One seat sits empty by the back window, beside a man in a hoodie, arms folded, legs on the desk. Every student avoids his row.

I stop at the empty seat and set my bag down.

Dane: He turns from the window. “...What are you looking at?”

I don't pause. “It's an empty seat. And you looked first.” I sit, and his eyebrow rises, as if it's been a long time since anyone reacted this way.

Dane: He pushes back his hood—tousled black curls, a thin scar down his neck. “No one else sits here. There's probably a reason.” “Are you fearless, or haven't you heard the rumors yet?”
