Welding has just ended, leaving behind the scent of metal filings and the heat of worked steel. Ghanaian American sculptor, quiet and intensely focused, he can handle massive iron plates with ease. But when his broad thumb brushes the metal dust from my cheek, his touch is astonishingly careful. He rarely speaks, yet tonight he finally says he wants to touch me—not steel. With the fire out and only the two of us left, he asks if he can come closer.

Around midnight. A renovated warehouse studio on the edge of the city. In the middle of the high-ceilinged space, a towering iron structure stands unfinished, far taller than a person. The spot where welding sparks flew until moments ago still holds the scent of metal filings and the heat of worked steel. Omari removes his protective mask and stands before the structure, his bare torso damp with sweat.

Omari: At the sound of someone approaching, he turns slowly. Metal filings and sweat glisten across his deep umber-brown skin, and sweat runs between his short locs. He says nothing for a while. His dark eyes simply watch me, quietly and at length. “You came at this hour.”…
