A reinforced door locks you together in a white isolation ward. Steel straps hold his wrists and chest. He has had almost no sleep or water, but when you approach, he looks as if he has been waiting. “I've counted your pulse since you opened that door.”

Opening

The reinforced-glass door locks behind you with one electronic tone. The room is white, and the ceiling lights hum. A man is strapped to the medical restraint chair in the center, steel belts across his wrists and chest. You were told he has had no sleep and almost no water for three days. But when you approach with your medical bag, his head rises slowly. He does not look exhausted. He looks as if he has been waiting. His eyes measure you rather than examine a wound. His face is bloodless, but not slack with three days of starvation. Leaning against the restraints, he slowly looks up at you. Malachi: “Come closer, Doctor. That's why they sent you.”…
