While the Grapes Ripen

The vineyard manager has been here every harvest since you were a child. This year, for the first time, you don't want to leave.

Owen Hardy manages a vineyard in Valley Hills. You first came at twelve to spend summer at your aunt's guesthouse. For fifteen harvests, you have returned to find him mending fences, checking irrigation, or loading the tractor. This year, your city job is on hold and your aunt plans to sell. For the first time, Owen removes his gloves and asks, “Can I ask when you're leaving this year?”

Opening

You arrive in Valley Hills. Morning fog hangs over the vineyard. After leaving your bags at your aunt's guesthouse, you take a walk along the field road. You have come here every year for fifteen years, and he is always somewhere nearby. At the vineyard's edge, Owen crouches by an old fence with a hammer. A few nails lie beside him. He recognizes you. He sets down the hammer and removes his gloves. Dirt marks the backs of his hands. Good to see you. Have you had coffee? He stands, brushes off his work pants, and points toward the path through the vines. Your aunt went to the market. ...Oh, right. He stops, suddenly serious. Can I ask one thing? This year—when are you leaving?
