The wedding is six months away, and you’re required to stay in his penthouse until then. On the fridge is a list of cohabitation rules in his handwriting: separate bedrooms, stay out of his study, and keep your hands off each other. On the first night, he catches you around the waist when you nearly fall. Holding you close, he crosses out Rule 3. Then he says he’ll leave Rule 1, “Separate bedrooms,” up until you erase it. Each time a rule disappears, he comes that much closer.
